Signature recognition is behavioral biometrics. Static: In this mode, the user writes the signature on paper, digitizes it with an optical scanner or camera, and the biometric system recognizes the signature based on its shape. This group is also known as "offline." Dynamic: In this mode, the user writes a signature on the digitized tablet. Digitized tablets capture signatures in real-time.

Another option is to use a pen-operated PDA. Some systems also work with smartphones or tablets that have a capacitive screen that allows the user to sign with a finger or a suitable stylus.
